The Work of the EKG Technician
The EKG Technician has a pre-defined support role that is critical to the cardiac arrest team. While assisting with the electrocardiogram equipment, other performance requirements may include: patient preparation by explaining the testing procedure and fastening of electrodes to specific areas – arms, legs, chest – maintaining patient's record and history, assisting in coding and distributing EKG data once the test is complete, and cleaning, adjusting, and ensuring EKG equipment is functioning properly by providing routine maintenance on equipment.
It is necessary that responsible EKG technicians be tactful and courteous when working, and demonstrate attention to detail when following oral and written instructions. This focused approach and responsiveness by the EKG technician not only enhances the their ability to work under pressure, it allows the professional EKG technician to understand how to best communicate with either a medical supervisor, patient, or patient representative should a need arise to assist in or initiate emergency procedures that are as prescribed by the medical facility or hospital policy.
The considerate EKG technician who displays a warm and welcoming attitude and a professional demeanor will also provide additional value to the patient and therefore be a responsible and complimentary asset to any health care team.
